How to measure AI visibility

‍
‍

AI search visibility is how often ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and other AI platforms name your brand, cite your pages and send people to your site. No single tool measures all of it. You measure it with four signals, each from a different place, and read them together.

This article shows what each signal can and can’t tell you, how to set each one up, and how to turn them into a monthly report you can trust.

Why it matters

Most AI influence never shows up as a click. In the first four months of 2026, 68% of US Google searches ended without a click to any website, up from 60% in 2024, according to SparkToro’s clickstream study. AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of searches.

So a report that only counts AI referral visits measures a shrinking slice of a growing behaviour. A customer can read a ChatGPT answer that recommends you, never click, and search your name a day later. That visit lands in Organic Search or Direct, and nothing ties it back to the answer.

The four signals

Each signal answers a different question and lives in a different system. They’re layers of one picture, so they’re never added together.

1. In the answer · Jepto AI Visibility42% namedMeasured on tracked promptsHomer’s Donuts was named in 151 of 360 answers, and cited in 18%.2. AI impressions · Search Console, Bing3,120No clicks reportedImpressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Bing counted 140 Copilot citations.3. AI bots · Server or CDN logs860Measured, once verifiedPages read live by ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity while answering someone.4. AI visits · GA4214UndercountedSessions in a custom AI channel. The built-in AI Assistant channel showed 158.
One month for Homer’s Donuts. Each number answers a different question: are we in the answer, are AI features showing us, are AI platforms reading us, and is anyone arriving.

1. In the answer: AI Visibility

This is the signal no analytics tool can see, because it happens on the AI platform, not on your site. AI Visibility sends the questions your customers ask to each platform on a schedule and checks every answer for two things: Named, where the answer mentions you, and Cited, where it links to a page you own. The AI Visibility Overview explains how the two combine.

A citation can send a click you’ll see in GA4. A mention can’t, but it often leads to a branded search or a direct visit later. Citations also come and go more often than mentions, so don’t benchmark on citations alone.

Set it up so the numbers hold

  1. In Settings, add every name customers and platforms use for you, and every domain you publish on. A missing name or domain makes Named or Cited look lower than it is.
  2. In Prompts, cover the whole buyer journey: category questions (“best donuts in Springfield”), comparisons (“Homer’s Donuts vs Glaze Co”) and problem questions. Set the Intent on each so you can see which stages you cover.
  3. Run each prompt on more than one platform, and in every country you sell in. Answers differ by platform and by market.
  4. Give it a few weeks before you report. Answers vary from run to run, so trends across many runs matter more than any single answer.

What to watch

  • Named and Cited on the overview, by platform.
  • Competitors: how often you’re named against each competitor, and what platforms say when they compare you.
  • Sources: the sites answers rely on, and the searches ChatGPT and Perplexity ran first. The Your page retrieved and Google rank columns tell you whether a gap is an AI problem or an SEO problem.
  • Claims: what platforms say about you, and whether it conflicts with your business information.

2. AI impressions: Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools

Google and Microsoft now report part of your AI visibility directly, for free. Neither reports clicks from AI features separately, so use them to measure exposure, not traffic.

Google Search Console

Since 3 June 2026, Search Console has Generative AI performance reports. They show how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. Three limits apply:

  • No clicks. AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are still counted as Organic Search, in Search Console and in GA4.
  • No split. AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported together.
  • Already in your totals. These impressions are also inside the standard Performance report, so don’t add the two.

Google hasn’t added this report to the Search Console API yet, so no reporting tool, Jepto included, can pull it in. Export it from Search Console each month.

Your standard query data, which Jepto pulls in through the Search Console data source, also holds clues. Impressions holding steady while clicks and CTR fall is the classic footprint of an AI answer sitting above you. It’s a pattern, not proof, and it’s clearest when you compare groups of queries instead of single ones. Paste these into the Search Console query filter as a custom regex:

Query groupWhy it helpsRegex
Question queriesAI Overviews appear most on these. Compare their CTR trend with branded queries.^(how|what|why|when|which|who|where|can|does|is)\b
Queries of 8+ wordsThese read like prompts. High impressions with few clicks show the topics people ask AI-style.^(\S+\s+){7,}\S+$

In Jepto, you can build the same comparison in a report from a prompt, such as “CTR by week for question queries vs branded queries, last 6 months”.

Bing Webmaster Tools

The AI Performance report counts how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries, and lists the cited URLs. It also shows grounding queries: the searches the AI ran to find supporting content. Since June 2026 it adds Citation Share, your portion of all citations for a grounding query.

Grounding queries are Bing’s version of the searches Jepto shows on Sources for ChatGPT and Perplexity. A topic that shows up in both is one several platforms search for when answering about your category. If you have no page for it, that’s your next page.

3. AI bots: are platforms reading your site?

Before a platform can cite a page, one of its bots has to fetch it. Those requests appear in your server logs and in your CDN or firewall, such as Cloudflare. They never reach GA4, because bots don’t run analytics code. Not every bot means the same thing:

Bot purposeWhat one request meansExample user agentsReview
Live fetchSomeone asked an AI a question and it read your page to answer, right thenChatGPT-User, Claude-User, Perplexity-UserWeekly
AI search indexYour page is being indexed so it can be cited laterOAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBotMonthly
Search engines that feed AIYour page is eligible for AI Overviews, AI Mode or CopilotGooglebot, BingbotMonthly
Model trainingFuture models may know more about youGPTBot, ClaudeBot, Meta-ExternalAgent, CCBotQuarterly

Live fetches are the most valuable. Each one is a real conversation that used your content, even if nobody clicked.

Before you read anything into the numbers, verify them. User agent names are easy to fake, so only count requests from the IP ranges OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity publish, or that pass Google’s and Microsoft’s reverse DNS checks. Then look at which URLs the bots hit: you want them on the pages you’d like cited, not on redirects, 404s and tag archives.

4. AI visits: GA4

When someone clicks a link in an AI answer, GA4 records the session. It’s the most direct evidence of AI-driven visits, and the most undercounted.

Since 13 May 2026, GA4 has a built-in AI Assistant channel. It catches visits whose referrer is on Google’s list of AI assistants, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok. Everything else lands somewhere else:

Where 100 visits from ChatGPT answers land in GA4AI Assistant 61AI Assistant 61Referral 14Unassigned 6Direct 19
An illustration. Links with their own UTM tags fall into Referral or Unassigned, and app clicks without a referrer land in Direct. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode aren’t here at all: they stay in Organic Search.

A custom channel group recovers most of the Referral and Unassigned share, and it applies to your historical data too:

  1. In GA4, go to Admin → Data display → Channel groups and create a group by copying the default.
  2. Add a channel called AI Assistants, with two conditions joined by OR: Source matches the regex below, or Medium exactly matches ai-assistant.
  3. Move AI Assistants above Referral. Channels match in order, so below Referral it never sees chatgpt.com.
  4. In Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, switch the primary dimension to your new group.
ConditionValue
Source matches regexchatgpt\.com|openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|edgeservices|deepseek\.com|grok\.com|meta\.ai|mistral\.ai|you\.com|phind\.com|poe\.com
Medium exactly matchesai-assistant

Review the list every quarter, because new AI products appear often. Report key events and revenue per AI session alongside volume, and add Landing page to see which pages AI sends people to. Compare that list with the pages shown as cited on Sources.

The rest of the influence arrives later. Searching your name lands in Organic Search, typing your address lands in Direct, and tapping a link in an AI app usually lands in Direct or Unassigned. That’s why rising branded search and rising direct traffic are worth watching beside your Named rate, though neither proves anything on its own.

Reading the signals together

One signal rarely tells you what to do. The combinations do. Start with how often you’re named against how many AI visits arrive:

AI visits arrivingFew AI visitsNamed oftenWorkingYou’re recommended and people click. Check which pages they land on.Talked about, not clickedNormal for mentions. Watch branded search and direct for the delayed visits.Rarely namedClicked, not creditedYour pages are cited without your name. Check other names in Settings.MissingYou’re not in the answers. Start with the prompts where Named is lowest.
Find your box first, then use the table below when something specific changes.

A monthly scorecard

Report the same measures every month against the previous month, and say plainly which are measured and which are proxies. Stakeholders trust a report more when its limits are stated up front.

MeasureSourceConfidence

Lead with Named, Cited and Claims, because they explain everything downstream. List what you changed that month, such as pages fixed, claims corrected and sources approached, so the next month’s numbers have context. Between reports, AI Visibility insights flag drops, lost citations and inaccuracies as they happen.

Troubleshooting

  • There’s no AI Assistant row in GA4. Your report may use a custom channel group, which doesn’t inherit new default channels. Switch to Session default channel group, or add the channel to your custom group.
  • The custom AI channel shows more sessions than AI Assistant. Expected. It also catches sources Google doesn’t recognise and sessions that would otherwise fall into Referral.
  • Search Console has no Generative AI report. Google is releasing it property by property. Check again later.
  • Bing citations jumped on 1 June 2026. Microsoft says this was a data backfill, not a visibility gain. Compare periods after that date only.
  • No AI bots appear in your logs. They’re usually blocked. Cloudflare, for example, also blocks Googlebot and Bingbot when AI training is blocked, because those bots crawl for several purposes. Robots.txt change detection alerts you when robots.txt changes.
  • Named is low, but answers clearly mention you. The answers use a name that isn’t in Settings. Add it under Also known as.

FAQ

What is AI search visibility?
‍
How often AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Mode mention your brand, cite your pages and send visitors to your site. It covers what the answers say about you, not only the traffic they produce.

How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my brand?
‍
Track the questions your customers ask in a tool that runs them on a schedule and records each answer, such as Jepto AI Visibility. Checking by hand is unreliable, because answers vary between runs, accounts and countries.

Can I see AI Overviews traffic in Google Analytics?
‍
No. GA4 counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode as Organic Search. Search Console’s Generative AI report shows impressions in those features, but not clicks.

Does GA4’s AI Assistant channel capture all AI traffic?
‍
No. It only includes assistants on Google’s list that pass a referrer. A custom channel group with your own source regex, placed above Referral, captures more.

What’s the difference between a mention and a citation?
‍
A mention is your brand named in the answer. A citation is a link to your page as a source. A citation can send a click; a mention usually leads to a branded search or direct visit later.

Which AI bots should I allow?
‍
To appear in AI answers, allow the live-fetch and search bots, such as ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-User, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User, plus Googlebot and Bingbot. Blocking training bots is a separate decision.
