How to interpret changes

When changes are made to your profile they are recorded in JSON format which can be hard to understand. The guide below will help you to understand what those changes mean.

Relationships

The relationship data is what Google uses to determine if the profile is part of a multi-location business or co-located business. Changes to this field is often a positive one because it can lead to profiles becoming more prominent in the SERP and Maps due to their association.

A Chain ID (i.e. chains/ChIJ7Qlr1nrZoYcRqD0DfHM2Sas) in the change history refers to a brand that your business's locations are now affiliated with. In this example, that ID corresponds to McDonalds and can only be decoded by API call. If you would like to get this information please justask our support team to provide this information.

The relationship can be one of two options:

DEPARTMENT_OF - This represents a relation between 2 locations that share one physical area, same brand/upper management/organization, but with different key attributes like store hours or phone numbers. For example, Costco Pharmacy is a department in Costco Wholesale.

INDEPENDENT_ESTABLISHMENT_IN - This represents the cases where 2 locations are co-located in the same physical location, but from different companies (e.g. Starbucks in a Safeway, shops in a mall).

Has Voice Of Merchant

When this field is set to true it means that you are in control of the listing. If however this is false it means that the listing has been marked as suspended, duplicate or closed and you must go through verification again.

Service Area

If you add or remove service areas for a location, you will see the places listed as a group of objects. As a place can be a city/town/state/country these can take various forms, but each area will include a Place ID and a name, e.g. {'placeName': 'New South Wales, Australia', 'placeId': 'ChIJDUte93TLDWsRLZ_EIhGvgBc'}. The place ID can be used on other Google APIs like the Maps API to get the geogrpahic boundary but it most cases you will just want to pay attention to the name.
