Display values as vertical columns. Compare metrics across categories or time periods with customizable column styling and legends.

A column chart displays data as vertical bars, making it ideal for comparing values across categories or time periods. Use column charts to show performance trends, compare metrics across regions or channels, or display categorical data comparisons with a vertical orientation.

Configuring a Column Chart

Follow these steps to create or edit a column chart:

In your report, click Create Card to add a new card, or click an existing card to edit it
From the card type options, select Column Chart
Go to the Data tab to select your metrics and dimensions
Go to the Chart tab to customize appearance
Go to the Card tab to edit the card styling
Go to the Palette tab to customize colors
Go to the Custom tab for advanced JSON overrides (optional)
Click Save when finished

AI Edit

Use natural language to configure your chart. Click the AI Edit button at the top of the settings panel and describe what you want your chart to show. AI will automatically configure all settings including data, visualization, and styling based on your description. This is a faster alternative to manually configuring each tab.

Data Tab

Configure the data source and display options for your column chart. Select your time period, choose dimensions and metrics to visualize, and set sorting and comparison options. This tab determines what data appears in your chart and how it's organized.

Chart Tab

Customize the visual appearance and behavior of your column chart. Control how data is displayed, configure axes and gridlines, enable animations and tooltips, and manage legend settings. All visual customization options for your chart are configured here.

Card Tab

Configure how your chart is displayed and styled within your report. Customize the card's appearance with title, description, icon, and styling options for both light and dark modes. Reset to your report's default theme at any time.

*The colored numbers on the preview and settings panel match each other. When you change a setting, it updates the part of your card where that number points.*

Palette Tab

Control the color scheme used in your chart. Choose to use your report's default theme palette or create a custom palette. Configure colors separately for light and dark modes to ensure visibility in both themes. Palette changes affect all charts using that palette.

Custom Tab

Enable advanced customization using JSON visualization overrides for complete control over chart behavior and appearance. This tab is for developers and advanced users who want to modify the chart beyond standard configuration options. See the HighCharts documentation for complete customization possibilities.
